Here's a study that shows that sugar-sweetened beverages can adversely affect liver health & you should really avoid them whenever possible (which you can do all the time...honestly you can!)

Em, sorry to bump this topic, but what about energy drinks? Like Gatorade, Red Bull, Livita, 100+ etc? Is it applicable? (it does help replenish fluids but also wondering what drink we could make to replace this)

I would think that as most of those are sugar sweetened then they would fall into that group as well..If you're using them during training it might be different as the sugar would be used pretty quickly as fuel. I'd say for you trying to lose fat I'd dump any drinks containing sugar, stick mainly to water & herbal teas (without added soya milk in the teas - I once got a girl to lower her calorific intake by over 300 cal simply by switching her to a herbal tea - that was just the amount of soya milk she added in a day, not added sugar to tea!).
The only people who really need to worry about replacing electrolyte levels are real endurance runners & other distance types, if you lift weights & do 30- or so minutes of cardio. Just eat plenty of green leafy veggies, bit of seaweed once every day or so & you'll get more than enough of every electrolyte you need. You only really need to worry about fluid replacement, just down enough water during training or a VERY dilute carb source & you'll be fine, as will 90% of people reading this I suspect.
