PostSubject: Advice from a trainer   Wed Sep 22, 2010 2:49 pm

Had a meeting with a trainer today. We looked at all of my specs. BP, weight, body-fat, etc.
The trainer, a nice lady, liked the three-day split I'm following, but suggested that I'd get more benefit from my lifting if I'd cut back to two sets instead of three. She commented that about 75% of the value of a particular exercise occurs during the first set. The second set produces only about 10% more, and the third set is pretty much a throw-away.

Does this concur with what you guys have heard?*

She also recommended more cardio, at least 30 minutes per session, and said that it's a good idea to vary the cardio routine--rowing one day, bike the next, and so forth.

* Okay, I just checked Pete's post, "Single set Vs multiple sets - which is best for muscle size?" which addresses this question.

Ageless Athletes has interesting insights about the "how many sets" discussion.

Also has good information for those of us who blow out many birthday candles.

There's also a book by Brooks Kubik (if you like his hard, abbreviated style), you can check it out here

"Gray Hair and Black Iron," great! Actually I prefer the author's sub-title, "Dinosaur Training."
It looks interesting and probably useful, I'll order a copy tomorrow. I look forward to reading the chapter titled. "Not Dropping Dead in the Middle of a Training Session."

The only thing that troubles me is that the author is a mere child of fifty-two.
FIFTY FUGGIN' TWO...! At fifty-five I qualified for the President's Fitness Award in three different categories, canoeing, hiking & backpacking, and weight-training (so I have three certificates autographed by Arnold Schwartznozzle).

However I appreciate that keeping fit and healthy in one's Golden Years is not only a matter of exercising every day, but there is also a matter of pure dumb luck. Obviously Gawd loves fools, and that keeps a lot of us going.
