I have a CD and tape player in my workout area. There’s no one around so I listen to pretty much anything I want. Since a typical CD runs about half an hour I use it to time my workout. My old coach used to say, “If your workout takes longer than half an hour you’re probably spending too much time sitting on the bench with your tongue hanging out!”
Today I listened to Beau Soleil’s “Gitane Cajun,” I can only understand about one word in four of their Cajun French, but their music is good.
Yesterday it was Bix Beiderbecke, “Jazz Me Blues,” recorded with the Wolverines in 1924. Bix was the greatest tenor horn (cornet) player of all times, but unfortunately fell down the neck of a whiskey bottle and drowned in 1931.
The day before was a reading of D.T. Suzuki’s “Zen and the Samurai,” exploring Zen Buddhism as it applies to the life and training of a Japanese warrior.
Not sure how this would be if you work out in a community gym. Probably be a good idea to use ear-buds if your musical tastes tend toward bagpipes or the “Grand March of the French Foreign Legion.”
